If you get "wasted", you don't die. You'll wake up outside the Hospital, where they have patched you up at the cost of some cash. Just like when you get busted, it will also be several hours later.
The ambulance parked in the back can be stolen and you can have a lot of fun with it. Certain vehicles know "sub-missions", actions you can do to earn money and other goodies while you are not on a mission. If you step into the ambulance and turn on the sub-mission, you have to save wounded people by taking them to the hospital. This must be done rather carefully, because the patients can't stand heavy bumps and won't survive the trip if you drive as usual.
An even bigger problem is to keep the ambulance itself alive... It tends to tilt easily because its top is very heavy. While operating under a time limit this can be really nerve-wrecking!

This was a very narrow escape: after a few rough rides in a row I drop off some patients at the hospital, with a burning ambulance and only 11 seconds to go... Unfortunately the ambulance exploded just after I got out, so I didn't survive it myself and ended up in front of the hospital agian!

A very fun and not too hard way to make some money is by doing taxi fares. Just jack a cab and turn on the sub-mission. This is in fact a game within the game: you can play it for hours. There is an Arcade videogame based on the same principle and it's called Crazy Taxi.
You'll have to find a fare, indicated by a green dot on the radar and a blue arrow above the unsuspicious victim. When he or she gets in, you'll be told where to go (and you get a red dot on the radar) and the time you have to do so starts ticking.

When you drop off your fare at the indicated location, you must use the seconds left on the timer to find a new fare. They are almost always at close range, around the corner or across the street.
If you drive (way) too wild you'll scare your passenger and he'll get out and flee in terror... Besides that, there are speed bonuses and bonuses for doing 5 or 10 etc in a row.
Most important is that you get to know the city layout by doing taxi fares!

Ofcourse, you can just take a car and drive around, enjoying the nice weather. Note the shadows of the train tracks on the road surface.
The 4x4 Patriot is very suitable for off-road terrain explorations, by the way.

The weather conditions are very variable in Liberty City. It can be pooring rain (see the first screenshot, on page 1), the sun may be shining or there can be rather dense fog. It's worth it to take al look at the sky every now and then to see all the different conditions and colors. If you like you can sit and watch the sky turn red at sunset :-)
